BackAm I Eligible for the £2,500 Grant?
To qualify for the upcoming £2,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant for air-to-air heat pumps, you must meet strict government criteria.
Location & Ownership
You must own the property, and it must be located in England or Wales.
Energy Efficiency (EPC)
You must have a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) with no outstanding recommendations for loft or cavity wall insulation.
Complete Replacement
The new system must completely replace an existing fossil fuel (gas, oil, LPG) or direct electric heating system. Hybrid setups are not supported.
What is an Air-to-Air Heat Pump?
Don't let the technical jargon confuse you. An air-to-air heat pump is simply the industry term for a modern, highly efficient Air Conditioning unit.
They are classified as renewable technology because they use a reversible cycle. In the summer, they extract heat from inside your home and pump it outside (cooling). In the winter, they reverse the process, pulling ambient heat from the outside air to warm your rooms.
"Air-to-air heat pumps represent the future of UK home comfort. Because they deliver up to 4 units of heat for every 1 unit of electricity they consume, they are vastly more efficient than traditional gas boilers, making them the perfect candidate for the expanded 2027 BUS grant."
Benefits of Upgrading
Highly Efficient
Achieve between 300% to 500% efficiency. For every 1kWh of electricity used, you get roughly 4kWh of heat out, drastically lowering your carbon footprint.
Year-Round Comfort
One system does it all: crisp, cool air conditioning during summer heatwaves, and cozy, efficient heating during the freezing winter months.
Perfect for Flats & Apartments
Unlike traditional air-to-water heat pumps, air-to-air systems do not require hot water cylinders or bulky, space-consuming radiators.
Technology Comparison
| FEATURE | TRADITIONAL BOILER | AIR-TO-AIR AC |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Function | Heating Only | Heating & Cooling |
| Max Efficiency Rating | ~90% - 94% | Up to 400%* |
| Boiler Upgrade Scheme Grant | Not Eligible | Eligible in 2027 (£2,500) |
| Space Requirements | Requires radiators & pipework | Compact wall units |
Are There Other Air Conditioning Grants?
While the BUS scheme is the primary national focus, there are other avenues for support, most notably the Warm Homes Local Grant.
Managed by local councils, this grant helps eligible, lower-income households make energy-saving improvements. Because air-to-air heat pumps drastically improve energy efficiency compared to old electric heaters, they can sometimes be partially funded through these local initiatives.
We recommend checking your local authority's website to see if you qualify for immediate assistance in your area.
Is Installing Air Conditioning Worth it for My Home?
If you find your home unbearably hot during the increasingly frequent UK summer heatwaves, or if your current electric heating bills are soaring in the winter, modern air conditioning is a highly worthwhile investment.
- Energy Savings: Modern A+++ rated systems use significantly less electricity than portable heaters or older AC units.
- Air Quality: Built-in filters remove dust, pollen, and allergens from your home.
- Property Value: Dedicated climate control is becoming a highly sought-after feature for UK homebuyers.

FAQ's
Yes! The Boiler Upgrade Scheme will cover air-to-air heat pumps starting in 2027. "Air-to-air heat pump" is simply the technical term for modern, reverse-cycle air conditioning units that can both heat and cool your property.
The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, administered by Ofgem, has officially confirmed that the £2,500 funding for air-to-air heat pumps will become available in 2027. We recommend joining our waitlist now to secure your spot when applications open.
You must have a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) to apply. Most importantly, your EPC must not have any outstanding recommendations for loft or cavity wall insulation. If it does, you will need to install the insulation and get a new EPC before applying.
If you own a property in England or Wales, you can likely apply. This covers homeowners, private landlords, and small business owners. The only exception is social housing, which doesn't qualify.
- £7,500 for an air source or ground source heat pump.
- £9,000 if you live off the gas grid and upgrade to an air or ground source heat pump (a temporary bonus available until March 2027).
- £5,000 for a biomass boiler.
- £2,500 for an air-to-air heat pump (this is just the technical term for modern air conditioning).
Your new system must completely replace a fossil fuel setup (like gas, oil, or LPG) or direct electric heating (like old storage heaters). You won't get a grant to replace an existing eco-friendly system, and hybrid setups (like keeping your gas boiler alongside a new heat pump) aren't allowed.
Standard new-builds from property developers don't qualify. However, if you're building your own home (a self-build) using your own money, you are fully eligible.
We handle the boring paperwork for you. You don't apply to the government directly. As your certified installer, we submit the application to Ofgem on your behalf and deduct the grant value straight from your upfront quote.
You can't use multiple public grants to pay for the exact same heat pump. But, if you've already used government funding for other upgrades—like loft insulation or new windows—you can still use the BUS for your heating.
