Introducing The New Viessmann Vitodens 050-W Combi Boiler

Viessmann boiler

As one of Viessmann’s best-selling boilers, this blog will be comparing the original Vitodens 050-W boiler model with the newly improved and upgraded 050-W model, which was released in August 2021.

Aside from the fact that Viessmann has re-designed the appearance of the new 050-W so that it no longer looks like a boring, old-school white box in the corner of your kitchen, the new model comes with a range of new features and improvements.

This blog will be discussing everything we know so far about the old and new Vitodens 050-W, including features, dimensions, kW models available, warranty, and installation costs. You will also get a feel for what Viessmann’s customers have to say about the brand and their boilers.

The History Behind Viessmann

As a warm-up before the battle between old vs. new begins, here is some information about the history behind Viessmann as a company.

The Viessmann Group is a German manufacturer of heating, industrial, and refrigeration systems headquartered in Allendorf, Germany.

Viessmann’s roots go back even further than Worcester’s, starting in 1928, where Johann Viessmann was asked by a local gardener to build a boiler for his greenhouse. Johann, then a locksmith, thought ‘why not’ (they didn’t have TikTok back then). Viessmann innovated on the iron boilers around at the time and built his using steel which heated up faster and used less fuel.

Since January 2018, the company is led by Martin Viessmann (Chairman of the Executive Board), Maximilian Viessmann (Co-CEO and part-time Bond villain), and Joachim Janssen (Co-CEO). Making Viessmann a family-owned business for four generations, quite a rare thing.

You can find out more about the Viessmann company and the rich history of over 100 years in business yourself, as that could be a blog on its own.

New Vs. Old

The new Viessmann Vitodens 050-W combi boiler range has been designed to be compact and lightweight, making it easy to install. It is available in two power outputs of 29kW and 35kW, perfect for homes with up to 20 radiators and 2 bathrooms.

If you are unsure what kW output means or you’re unsure what kW output is best suited for your home, don’t stress, we have your back. Here are some blogs that could help (self-promo alert 😉)

Combi boilers are ideal for smaller properties, for example, if you have an overpriced flat in London, that is the size of Harry Potter’s cupboard, the new 050-W will be perfect for you 😉. This is thanks to its compact design, and because combi boilers are built to combine both the water heater and the central heating in one single unit, removing the need for any additional hot or cold water tanks, as you would need with a system or regular boiler.

Let’s take a look at the old Vitodens 050-W combi boiler in comparison to the new design so that we can compare the difference between them both.

Let the battle commence!

Viessmann Brand Reviews

During the Which? Best Buy 2020 Survey, over 7,500 customers were asked what their overall thoughts were of their Viessmann boiler.

Viessmann ranked 3rd place out of 13 boiler brands, beating other well-known boiler brands such as Ideal. But what does this mean? Well, these scores were based on whether or not the customers boiler had an issue or a fault identified within the first 6 years of installation, how likely the customers were to recommend a Viessmann boiler to a relative or friend, how heating engineers feel about the overall build quality, ease of fixing and ease of finding parts or spares for the boiler.

Customers and engineers were asked to score on the following categories:

  • Customer Score
  • Engineer recommendation
  • Build quality
  • Availability of parts and spares
  • Ease of fixing a common fault
  • Ease of servicing

When looking at the scores, apart from being slightly harder to find parts for the boiler, customers feel that their Viessmann boilers are top-notch.

Viessmann Which? Boiler Brand Survey Results:

Overall Score72%
Reliability4 stars
Customer Score5 stars
Engineer recommendation4 stars
Ease of fixing a common fault4 stars
Ease of servicing 4 stars
Availability of spares and parts 2 stars
Build quality4 stars

Results show that Viessmann as a company is seen as a reliable and good quality brand for boilers. Although they lack slightly in the availability of spares and parts category, which can become a problem during installation or future servicing, it is evident that customers love their Vitodens boiler!

Here’s what Which? have to say about Viessmann:

“Viessmann boilers have been Best Buys for the past few years, but they just miss out this year. Viessmann still makes great boilers that are reliable and loved by people who own them. Heating engineers rate them too, just not quite as highly as the very very best, so they narrowly miss out on a Best Buy.”

Viessmann UK has over 2.1k reviews and 4.6 stars out of 5 on Trustpilot. A whopping 94% of these reviews are above average.

Here are what customers have to say about Viessmann boilers:

“Fantastic boiler – quiet, efficient and powerful. Worth every penny and I am so glad I made the choice of purchasing Viessmann.”

“Almost one year since I had a Viessmann boiler installed, it’s been reliable and efficient. Very easy to use the settings and pleased with the boiler performance.”

“Boiler fitted hassle-free, boiler works like a dream”.

Introduction to the NEW Viessmann Vitodens 050-W

The NEW Viessmann Vitodens 050-W was released in August 2021. With its swanky new modern look, matching the rest of the Viessmann boilers, we know this boiler will be a hit!

Cost of installation

The biggest cost involvement in fitting a boiler comes with the Gas Safe installer that fits it. This is the biggest difference in price between a boiler you’ve seen listed in a heating store like Plumbnation for £850.

For example, the cheapest Worcester Bosch boiler available from WarmZilla is the Worcester Greenstar 12Ri for £1,649. You can pick this boiler up from Plumbnation for £807.29. That’s less than half the price we hear you cry out in disbelief.

Whilst initially this may seem like a great deal, we’ve been contacted by many potential customers who have taken this route only to find the price doesn’t include installation! The price with installation becoming much more expensive than the WarmZilla boiler price.

As a rough guide these are the kind of prices you can expect to pay for different boiler installation types from WarmZilla, inclusive of VAT:

Combi to combi boiler swap – £1,489
System/Standard boiler to combi conversion – £2,249
Back boiler to combi conversion – £2,499
System to system – £1,995 (Free Hive Smart Thermostat Inc.)
Standard to standard – £1,649 (Free Hive Smart Thermostat Inc.)

For more information about how much boiler installation costs, we have a blog that you will offer guidance on this.

*The WarmZilla Viessmann 050 30kW Package includes an exclusive 12-year guarantee, 10 years provided by the manufacturer and 2 years provided by WarmZilla. More info is available on the WarmZilla T&C pages.
