Navien was founded in 1978 in South Korea as KyungDong Navien (KD Navien). Navien was the first heating company in Asia to introduce condensing boilers and have since become established players in the U.S heating market.
Navien has only been operating in the U.K market since 2014, so they don’t really have the reputation of other leading brands.
Navien Boilers
Navien is the number 1 boiler brand in Northern America, they have installed over 1.5 million boilers into Russian homes and they have been ranked first in the Gas Boiler category of the Korean Standard Quality Excellence Index every year since 2006.
They seem to produce good quality boilers with long warranties (7 years as standard), which in itself tells you the manufacturer believes the product is reliable. The heat exchangers on Navien boilers are made out of stainless steel, which means that they will last longer.
Navien boilers are also highly efficient, rating over 90% efficiency on all of their boilers.
Navien boilers are also fairly reasonably priced too, with a 28kW NCB combi boiler coming in at around £750 (boiler only)
What about reviews? Well, they have a meagre 73 reviews on Trustpilot, which is not a lot of reviews if they have been operating in the U.K since 2014. A lot of reviews are from engineers that install Navien’s too. Navien does have a very good score of 4.7/5, so the few customers that do go for a Navien are obviously quite happy with them.
Navien doesn’t have a lot of different models available in the U.K market but they do have a good range of kW options that will cover anything from flats to large homes.
If you ask heating engineers what they think of Navien, most of them will shrug and say they don’t really know. Despite being massive in other countries, Navien has struggled to gain a foothold in the U.K market dominated by Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Baxi, and Ideal.
Navien boilers may be great but people tend to stick to what they know. You know if you buy a Worcester Bosch you’re getting a reliable boiler with great aftercare and good value for money. Buying a Navien is something of a risk, so in answer to the question ‘Should I buy a Navien boiler?’, the answer is ‘Yes, if you like minor risks’. On paper, they are good boilers, but in real-world terms, we don’t really know.
WarmZilla does not sell Navien boilers because there isn’t any demand for them from our customers. There are boilers that occupy a similar space in the boiler market that are a bit more familiar, and therefore more trusted.
Navien boilers are fairly reasonably priced, they aren’t the cheapest, coming in at a mid-range price. The Navien NCB 28kW Natural Gas Combination Boiler costs £760 (without installation) from a plumbing merchant.
From the same plumbing merchant, an Ideal Logic+ C30 (30kW) combi boiler costs £880. A £120 difference is a decent amount but with WarmZilla there is an exclusive 8-year guarantee on Ideal boilers and the Ideal aftercare is top-notch. The Ideal Logic+ is also a slightly more powerful boiler.
A WarmZilla boiler comes with the boiler, Gas Safe installation, system filter, system cleanse, inhibitor, wireless thermostat, up to 14 years guarantee, any flues or extension kits you may need; plus, if your condensate or gas pipes require upgrading – that’s included in your fixed price boiler quote too!
You can get a quote now on a new boiler with all the extras mentioned above, in a few minutes using the WarmZilla online survey.
Failing to get your Navien boiler annually serviced as required will lead to your warranty being invalidated.
Your typical Naien boiler service will include a thorough inspection of the following:
- Your flame sense device to ensure it is working correctly
- The pilot burner, cables and probes
- High-limit thermostat
- Your boilers operation
- Provision of adequate ventilation
- Flue effectiveness
- Heating controls
- Electrical wiring connections
- Location of the boiler and nearby combustible materials
- Safety devices are working properly
- All seals
Ensuring that all the above are checked and are in working order plays an essential role in keeping yourself and those around you safe.
How do I know when I need a boiler service?
As mentioned, your boiler should be serviced annually from the date of installation. However, if you notice any of the following happening whilst your boiler is turned on, please book a boiler service as soon as you can.
- The flame in the boiler is irregular
- The boiler flame is yellow
- There are new stains or smoke marks on the appliance or nearby
- The boiler overheats or refills regularly
- The water pressure drops
- The pilot light often goes out
- It’s been a year or more since the last service
