A system boiler has a separate hot water storage cylinder but doesn’t require a cold water storage tank.

Regular boilers have a hot water tank (usually in an airing cupboard) and a cold water tank (usually in the loft).

Back boilers (BBU) are built behind a fireplace, they are no longer fitted because they are inefficient.
