A kilowatt (kW) is a measure of power, where 1 kilowatt equals 1,000 watts. For air conditioning, you will usually see ratings like 2.5kW, 3.5kW, or 5kW—these tell you the cooling capacity of the unit and how much heat it can remove from a room.
The larger the space, the more powerful the unit you will need. This is important because a unit with a higher kW rating can cool down larger rooms more quickly and maintain a comfortable temperature in areas with high "heat loads," such as rooms with south-facing windows or plenty of electronic equipment.
